Steel and iron, Ward Ave, Moosup

Steel and iron recycling in Moosup, CT

From a basement full of old appliances to a flatbed of heavy iron. Winco weighs it on a 35-foot truck scale and makes a fair offer.

Chapter 01

Five grades of steel and iron, in the yard's own words

Winco takes any steel 1/8 inch or thinner; steel from appliances, car body parts and bicycles; white iron; unprepared heavy iron (3/16 or thicker in lengths of 4 feet or greater); and No. 1 prepared heavy iron (3/16 or thicker in lengths of 4 feet or less).

Most loads are a mix of those. A water heater, a bike frame and a length of channel iron can arrive in the same truck bed and end up on three different lines of the same ticket.

Thickness and length decide which iron you've got

Heavy iron is graded on two measurements. Is it 3/16 inch or thicker? Then length takes over: 4 feet or longer is unprepared heavy iron, and 4 feet or shorter is No. 1 prepared heavy iron. Cutting long pieces down to length is the usual way scrap people turn unprepared iron into prepared, and the grades are set up with that in mind.

Everything is weighed on the 35-foot truck scale at 24 Ward Ave, so large truckloads of recyclable metal are fine. Trained technicians weigh and assess each load and make a fair offer. Edgardo M. said on Winco's site that the staff walked him through how to use the scale and sell the metal.

Chapter 03

Loading the truck so the grading goes quickly

Keep light steel (1/8 inch or thinner) apart from heavy pieces, and keep white iron out of the heavy pile. A tape measure on the long pieces saves a guess at the scale: if it's 3/16 or thicker, the 4-foot line is the one that matters.

Appliances, car body parts and bicycles all go in with the steel. David B., on Winco's site, made his first trip to a scrap yard with old appliances from a basement and shed, and said it couldn't have been easier.

Measure it, then weigh it

Two numbers sort your iron

Thickness first, length second. The table is Winco's own split between light steel, unprepared heavy iron and No. 1 prepared heavy iron, so you can read your pile before you drive over.
