Copper recycling in Moosup, CT
Bare bright, No. 1, No. 2, insulated wire and electric motors, weighed on a 35-foot truck scale and paid on a fair offer.
Chapter 01
The copper grades we take at Ward Ave
Winco Scrap Metal & Container takes copper in every grade the yard sorts: bare bright copper wire, stripped copper wire, insulated copper wire, No. 1 copper and No. 2 copper. Electric motors come in too, and that includes starters and alternators.
No. 1 copper means clean copper with no solder, paint or fittings on it. No. 2 copper is a copper product that does have solder, paint or fittings. Both are welcome at the yard in Moosup. They just get graded apart, because they are not the same material once it reaches a melter.
Winco has been family and locally owned since 1997, so the people grading your copper have looked at a lot of it.

How copper gets weighed and graded
Everything crosses the scale. The yard has a 35-foot truck scale on site, so a pickup bed of pipe and a full truckload of recyclable metal are handled the same way: weighed, then assessed.
Trained technicians look at what you brought and make you a fair offer. Not sure whether the copper in your truck is clean enough to count as No. 1? That is exactly what the assessment is for. Whether you have 10 pounds or 1,000, you get the same weigh-in.
One customer wrote on Winco's own site that a staff member explained how to use the scale and sell the metal. First-timers are expected, not tolerated.
Chapter 03
Prepping copper before you drive over
Keep the grades apart. Bare bright wire in one bucket, clean tubing in another, soldered or painted pieces in a third. Mixed loads can still be weighed, but a sorted load is easier to grade and easier to trust.
Pulling fittings and soldered joints off a pipe, or stripping the jacket from a run of wire, is what moves a piece up a grade. Painted or fitted copper is still worth bringing. It simply lands in No. 2.
Motors, starters and alternators can come as they are. Call (860) 230-0552 with questions about a particular load, or pull into 24 Ward Ave, Moosup, Monday to Friday 8 to 5 or Saturday 8 to 2.
Nick S., on Winco's website: “Great guys very helpful and best prices in eastern CT.”
Copper in, graded line by line
Keep each grade in its own bucket, so a bucket of bare bright is never averaged in with a soldered elbow. Separated copper is easier for the technician to weigh and assess.
Questions about what lands where? Ask at the scale, or ring the yard on (860) 230-0552. Prefer to see the other metals first? Wire has its own grades.
