Chapter 01

The stainless and alloy grades the yard takes

Winco Scrap Metal & Container takes five named grades in this family: 304 series stainless steel, 316 series stainless steel and 400 series stainless steel, plus Inconel and Monel.

Inconel is the nickel chromium-based super alloys. Monel is the nickel alloys. Both are the kind of metal a shop or a contractor rarely knows what to do with, which is why the yard lists them by name instead of lumping them in with general steel.

Winco has been family and locally owned in Moosup since 1997. If you are not sure what you have, bring it and ask.

How it gets weighed and graded

Alloy and stainless go across the same scale as everything else at 24 Ward Ave. The yard has a 35-foot truck scale on site, so a single sink basin and a full truckload of recyclable metal are handled the same way: weighed, assessed, then priced.

Trained, friendly technicians do the weighing and make a fair offer. Whether you have 10 pounds or 1,000, you get the same weigh-in and the chance to ask the people at the scale how the grading works.

A construction contractor can clear leftover stainless and other alloys off a job site this way and pick up some extra cash for it.

Chapter 03

Prepping stainless and alloy before you bring it

Keep the grades apart. A simple magnet test helps as general practice: 400 series stainless is magnetic, while 304 and 316 generally are not. Sorting before you load saves time at the scale.

Inconel and Monel are worth keeping in their own bucket, away from regular stainless. Mixed alloys are harder to assess and easier to mislabel.

Call (860) 230-0552 with questions about a specific load, or drive to Ward Ave in Moosup, Monday to Friday 8 to 5 or Saturday 8 to 2. Tell the yard what you think you have and roughly how much.

Five grades, five lines in the ledger

The yard sorts these by name, so a bucket of 316 never gets lost in a pile of mixed steel. Not sure which line yours belongs on? Ring (860) 230-0552 and ask before you load the truck.

Looking for plain steel instead? Steel and iron has its own grades.
